The Languedoc stretches from the mountains of the Cévennes to the Mediterranean, and from the marshes of the Camargue in the east to the foothills of the Pyrennees. Within it lie the major towns of Montpellier, Nîmes, Pézenas and Béziers, historic sites such as Carcassonne, the Via Dolmitia, Minerve and the Cathar castles, and hundreds of beautiful villages. Streams fall from the steep hills of the Cévennes, to merge into the the Orb and Hérault.

Keep an eye open for local fêtes, with travelling fairs, open-air dances, barbecues and fireworks. Sports and activities are well provided: canoeing, wind-surfing, diving, golf, tennis, cycling; or explore the nature reserves and ecology centres nearby.
